In June 2002 the pub was sold to the Tadcaster Pub Co formerly Commer Inns. Lynda and I bought the lease and traded for just over a year under a tied house, which limited our buying power in the real ale market. Things did not work out very well so after help from a friend and long negotiations with the Tadcaster Pub Co  they agreed to let us go free of tie. This obviously had its drawbacks with a sharp increase of rent etc but it has worked well in the end. We then added an extra four pumps making ten in total, three of these are resident all the time Jarrow Rivet Catcher, Greene King Abbot Ale and Westons Old Rosie Cider

The Quaker has been voted CAMRA pub of the year five times in seven years, which speaks for itself, an award which I hold in very high esteem. This however will not stop us in our venture to improve the Quaker, and win the award every year, because the majority of members think it is the best pub in the area. This year more new Beer, more Music, more festivals, and more pumps on the bar.

Music nights have proved very popular on Wednesday nights, mainly rock orientated (free entry before 7.30 and a small door charge after that) indeed we are now one of the premiere venues in the north and although the numbers have to be limited, because of the size of the bar we still get some of the biggest rock bands in the North East wanting to play here. Take a look in the live music section for future gigs and a look at some of the bands that have played recently.

The Quaker opened as a Bar in October 1998 having undergone major alterations from the old Quaker Coffee House in October 1998. The Building although now one single property was originally 3 houses built in the late 1700,s when the yard was active with tradesmen such as coopers and blacksmiths. Mechanics Yard as it is known now used to be known as Betty Hobson’s yard indeed it is thought that Betty still haunts the yard. Whether there is any connection between this and our resident ghost I don’t know. There are plenty of stories going around so draw your own conclusions.

I started here as manager installing four real ales. Tetley’s Bitter was the house beer that quickly moved on and after the first year another two pumps were added taking it to six in total. We then developed our house ale in connection with Darwin Brewery naming it Ghost Ale after our resident spook.
